A new contest is challenging teens to create and produce TV spots about the dangers of text messaging and driving.
Minnesota teens in grades nine to 12 are invited to submit a 30-second video message for the contest sponsored by the Minnesota Public Safety Department and AAA Minnesota/Iowa.
Since a state law took effect in August 2008, texting, e-mailing, composing messages and web browsing is illegal for drivers and carries fines up to $300.

I was curious to see how many drivers were texting while driving on my daily commute to work which is about 2 miles one way on a highway in suburban St Paul,Mn. It’s not like NYC but its a well traveled route. I left at about 12pm from home and got on the two lane highway going north (Hwy 52) and passed maybe 25 cars before my exit about 2 miles away. I was only in for about an hour. (thats another story) I counted 7 (seven) people texting or looking at their phone while they drove. I was in the far left lane going 65-70 mph (oops) but to my right i saw seven (7) people texting with two hands. I noticed that they were mostly younger and two were 35+yrs old. I’m going to keep track of this out of curiosity. I did find my self checking my phone 3 times during my drive back home (Blackberry 8830) and had to press a key to wake the screen up. So if you have ever wondered give it a try and report it here. But be sure to practice safety first! Let everyone know !
